ACU fell short of the podium at UniSport Nationals 3x3 basketball competition

ACU was one of 18 universities to compete at this year’s UniSport 3x3 basketball competition hosted by UC Sport (University of Canberra) from 29-30 April.

ACU entered both a men’s and women’s team, made up of students from across all seven Campuses to compete at the two-day event. For most of the ACU students this was their first 3 x 3 tournament experience. ACU competed hard and adjusted to the physical and fast-paced style of play.

The women’s team had a tough start to their day one competition, suffering some narrow losses and closing the day with 0-3 record. The ACU men’s team had a solid day one, finishing with a 1-1 record with a solid victory against the home team, University of Canberra.

On day two, Team ACU regrouped and adjust their own style of play. ACU women’s team won their final two games with great victories versus ADFA and RMIT. Lauren McCaffrey and Lakeisha McLean must be mentioned for their outstanding performance across both days, along with solid support from Preshena Uthaya-Kumar and Jordyn Bradley, who altogether contributed to the Women’s team proudly finishing in 13th place.

ACU men’s team started day two with a quarter final game against a very physical FED, but went down narrowly 18-15. They finished the day with two solid victories and ended up placing 11th for the tournament. Outstanding contributions came from Lachlan Clarke and Luke Logan, while Tom Parker and Harrison Ross worked hard in the paint for the team.

ACU Basketball Manger and Head Coach Matt Shanahan was impressed with the overall results for both teams. “Both the men’s and women’s teams were formed from players who came from different states and ACU campuses across Australia. I was impressed how well jelled quickly as a group, especially given the short time to prepare as a team ahead of the competition starting. This was most noticeable on day two of the tournament where I felt we really hit our straps. All players represented the University with pride and showed a high level of sportsmanship at all times, which was great to see.”

UniSport Nationals continues next week with Triathlon being conducted in conjunction with Port Stephens Triathlon on 8 May.
