ACU student athletes in UniRoos team head to China

Seven ACU students have travelled to Chengdu, China as a part of the UniRoos team competing at the FISU Summer World University Games.

UniSport Australia recently announced that UniRoos, a 98-strong contingent of student athletes from across the country, is set to take on the world’s best student athletes across 11 different sports.

Exercise and sports science, physiotherapy and education students from five different ACU campuses have been selected in the national team, showing a strong sporting presence across the greater ACU network.

Last held in Napoli, Italy in 2019, the championships return to China after the Covid-19 virus forced the 2021 event to be postponed.

UniRoos is known for being an incubator for emerging athletes, and this year’s team is a melting pot of talent, boasting athletes beginning their international careers as well as Olympic and Commonwealth Games competitors – including 2019 FISU decathlete silver medalist, ACU’s Alec Diamond.

ACU Elite Athlete and Performer Program Coordinator Clare Meulenbroek sees the championships as a significant stepping stone and learning opportunity for young athletes.

“To be able to compete for your country at a world-level event with multiple sports exposes our students to a, for many, new level of competition and provides an opportunity to learn the logistics of traveling internationally and as a part of a combined sports team,” she said.

“Having athletes who have competed at World Championship, Olympic and Commonwealth Game level shows the standard of the FISU Summer Games. It’s a fantastic chance for tomorrow’s stars to learn from some of today’s stars.”

The championships begin on Friday 28 July and will be contested over 12 days before a closing ceremony on Tuesday 8 August.
